Two pedestrians are fighting for their lives after being struck by a vehicle at a busy pedestrian crossing in Lakemba, Sydney’s south-west, in a serious road accident that has prompted an investigation by police.
Emergency services were called to The Boulevarde in Lakemba shortly before 1pm on Tuesday following reports that two pedestrians had been hit by a white Toyota.
Police said the victims included a woman believed to be in her 30s and a man believed to be in his 60s. Both suffered severe head injuries and were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The woman was transported to Liverpool Hospital, while the man was taken to St George Hospital, where medical teams continue to provide treatment.
The driver of the vehicle, an 82-year-old man, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Authorities said three other pedestrians were also crossing the road at the time of the crash, but they were not injured.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Police are working to determine what led to the pedestrians being struck and have appealed for witnesses, CCTV footage, or dashcam recordings that may assist with inquiries.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about pedestrian safety at busy crossings, particularly in high-traffic areas where vehicles and pedestrians share road space.
