The business and financial communities are mourning the tragic loss of Wesley LePatner, a senior Blackstone executive who was identified as one of the victims killed during the mass shooting at a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening.
According to a spokesperson for Blackstone, LePatner was among four people fatally shot when 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas allegedly opened fire inside the building at approximately 7 p.m. Authorities say the gunman later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Who Was Wesley LePatner?
Wesley LePatner served as Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT). She spent more than a decade with Blackstone after beginning her career at Goldman Sachs, where she established herself as a respected leader in the investment industry.
A graduate of Yale University, LePatner was also an active supporter of the arts and served on the board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Throughout her career, she earned widespread recognition for her leadership, expertise, and commitment to excellence in the real estate investment sector.
Blackstone Pays Tribute
In a statement following the tragedy, Blackstone expressed profound grief over LePatner’s passing.
“Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed.”
Colleagues remembered her as a brilliant, passionate, warm, and generous leader who was deeply respected throughout the firm. They praised her dedication to mentoring others and the lasting impact she made on both the company and the broader financial industry.
Manhattan Shooting
According to investigators, the shooting occurred inside a Manhattan office tower Monday evening. Authorities said LePatner reportedly sought cover behind a pillar in the building’s lobby before the gunman opened fire.
In addition to LePatner, those killed included New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam, a building security guard, and an employee in the building’s Rudin Management office. An NFL employee was also critically injured in the attack.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the suspected gunman died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after the shooting.
