The Schenectady, New York, community and law enforcement family are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Detective Timothy Higgins, a dedicated officer whose life of service was cut short following a battle with cancer. Detective Higgins passed away overnight Monday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City at the age of 39, leaving behind his wife, three young children, family members, colleagues, and countless community members who were touched by his kindness and commitment.
Detective Higgins dedicated nearly 16 years of service to the Schenectady Police Department, joining the department in 2010 with a strong desire to protect and serve the residents of the city. Throughout his career, he demonstrated compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
At the time of his passing, Higgins was serving as a detective in the Youth Aid Bureau, where he worked to support and protect young people in the community. Before that assignment, he served in the Criminal Investigations Unit, investigating cases and assisting those in need. Earlier in his career, he worked as a general patrol officer and as a community police officer assigned to the Woodlawn and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods.
Schenectady Police Chief Brian Whipple remembered Detective Higgins as more than just an officer, describing him as a trusted colleague, true friend, and dedicated public servant whose impact reached far beyond his official duties.
“Detective Higgins devoted nearly sixteen years of his life to protecting and serving the people of Schenectady,” Chief Whipple said. “Tim was a dedicated police officer, a trusted colleague, and a true friend to so many throughout our department and community. His compassion, strength, sense of humor, and commitment to helping others were evident throughout his career.”
Those who worked alongside Higgins remember him as someone who brought warmth and positivity to the department. His fellow officers and first responders throughout the region have expressed deep sorrow over his passing while honoring the legacy of service, friendship, and dedication he leaves behind.
In the days surrounding his death, the Higgins family received an overwhelming show of support from the Schenectady Police Department, members of the law enforcement community, first responders, and residents who wanted to offer comfort during this difficult time. The outpouring of support reflects the lasting impression Detective Higgins made throughout his years of service.
A fundraising campaign was established by the Schenectady Police Department PBA on behalf of Higgins’ family to provide support for his wife and three children as they navigate life after this devastating loss. The effort aims to help ease the financial challenges facing the family while honoring the memory of a man who dedicated his life to serving others.
Detective Timothy Higgins will be remembered as a courageous officer, devoted husband, loving father, and compassionate member of the Schenectady community. His sacrifice, dedication, and positive influence will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
