Family, friends, and the communities of Altamont and Parsons, Kansas, are mourning the tragic loss of Ryan J. Myers, 38, of Altamont, and Samantha A. Cahow, 30, of Parsons, who died in a devastating motorcycle crash on Wednesday afternoon, July 29, 2026, along U.S. Highway 59 in Labette County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. about two miles northeast of Altamont. Preliminary findings indicate that Myers was operating a northbound 1999 Harley-Davidson XL883 motorcycle with Cahow riding as a passenger when the motorcycle crossed the center line into the southbound lane for reasons that remain under investigation.
Authorities reported that the motorcycle collided head-on with a southbound 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven by Shaun T. Powell, 55, of Fort Scott. Investigators said Powell attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the right, but the vehicles collided before the crash could be prevented. The impact ejected both Myers and Cahow from the motorcycle.
Ryan Myers and Samantha Cahow were pronounced dead at the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol stated that neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet or eye protection at the time of the collision.
Powell sustained minor injuries, while his passenger, Lucas A. Kelley, 27, of Fort Scott, was not injured. U.S. Highway 59 remained closed for several hours as emergency crews responded to the crash and investigators documented the scene before reopening the roadway.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Officials have not yet determined what caused the motorcycle to cross into the opposing lane, and no further details have been released regarding the ongoing investigation.
