The football community is mourning the passing of Billy Ray Smith, a former NFL linebacker and Chargers legend who died on Wednesday at the age of 64. Smith, who spent his entire 10-year professional football career with the Chargers, leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the franchise’s most respected players and beloved figures.
The Los Angeles Chargers expressed their grief following Smith’s passing, remembering him not only as an outstanding football player but also as a person whose positivity, kindness, and generosity touched countless lives.
Chargers Owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos paid tribute to Smith, describing him as someone who brought joy and energy wherever he went.
“To know Billy Ray was to love Billy Ray,” Spanos said, highlighting that Smith was more than a member of the Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team. He was remembered as a lifelong Charger, a loyal teammate, and a friend whose smile and laughter brightened every room.
Smith was widely admired for his personality away from the field as much as his accomplishments on it. Friends, teammates, and members of the Chargers community remember him as someone who loved his family, supported his teammates, gave back to his community, and consistently helped those in need.
During his NFL career, Smith established himself as one of the most accomplished defensive players in Chargers history. Selected as the No. 5 overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, he played 126 games and started 111 contests during his decade with the franchise.
Smith earned numerous honors throughout his career, including being named Chargers Team MVP in 1987 and Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986. He recorded hundreds of tackles, 15 career interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries, and 13 forced fumbles.
Born and raised in Texas, Smith developed his football talents at Plano Senior High School, where he helped lead the team to a Texas Class 4A state championship. He later starred at the University of Arkansas, becoming one of the most decorated defensive players in Razorbacks history.
Smith was a two-time unanimous All-American in 1981 and 1982 and was later honored as a member of Arkansas’ All-Decade Team and All-Century Team. His achievements earned him recognition in the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, Razorback Hall of Honor, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
