The Colonial Heights, Virginia, community is mourning the tragic death of Desmon Nichols, 39, who was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 95 Tuesday evening.
According to the Virginia State Police, troopers responded to a report of a multi-vehicle collision around 5:24 p.m. on July 28 near the 54-mile marker on I-95 in Colonial Heights.
Investigators said Nichols was riding a 1998 Honda motorcycle when the crash occurred. Preliminary information indicates that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass a 2012 Ford F-150 by using the highway shoulder.
During the maneuver, the motorcycle struck the rear of the pickup truck, causing Nichols to be thrown from the motorcycle. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Nichols was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Following the impact, the motorcycle continued moving without a rider and later struck another vehicle before coming to a stop. Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported in the crash.
The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials are reviewing evidence and working to determine whether any additional factors contributed to the crash.
