The Des Plaines, Illinois, community is mourning the tragic loss of Magdalena Jablonska, a 48-year-old woman who died following a high-speed boat crash on the Fox River in unincorporated McHenry County. Her sudden passing has left family, friends, and loved ones devastated as they remember her life and mourn the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, Magdalena Jablonska of Des Plaines was killed in the boating crash that occurred Saturday afternoon on the Fox River near Riverside Drive, south of the McHenry Dam. An autopsy determined that she died from blunt force injuries to her body and head.
Authorities allege that the crash was caused by Richard Stevenson, 45, of Lisle, who was operating a triple-engine pontoon boat at a high speed in a designated no-wake zone. Prosecutors stated that Stevenson’s boat was traveling at nearly 80 mph before colliding with another vessel.
Following the crash, Stevenson remained at the scene and was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. Prosecutors said a toxicology test later showed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.236, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08.
Stevenson has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence. A judge ordered that he remain in custody while awaiting trial, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 5.
At the time of the collision, Magdalena was seated as a passenger in the other boat. Prosecutors said she died instantly from the impact. Her husband, who was operating their boat, suffered serious injuries but survived.
Two passengers who were aboard Stevenson’s boat were not seriously injured. Investigators said those passengers told authorities that Stevenson appeared to be stumbling on the dock before the crash.
As the investigation continues, Illinois Conservation Police are asking members of the public who witnessed the incident, saw either boat before the collision, or have photographs or video footage from the area around the time of the crash to come forward.
