The Eagle Lake and Mankato, Minnesota, communities are mourning the loss of Adam Michael Johnson, who passed away at his home on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the age of 49. His passing has left family, friends, fellow first responders, and colleagues heartbroken as they remember a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and dedicated public servant.
Born on May 15, 1977, to Timothy and Barbara (Van Brunt) Johnson, Adam was raised in Eagle Lake, where he built a life centered on family, service, and community. He attended Mankato Area Public Schools and graduated from Mankato East High School in 1995 before earning his degree from South Central College in 2012.
For the past five years, Adam worked at the Harry Meyering Center in Mankato, where he most recently served as a Program Manager. His compassion, leadership, and commitment to supporting others earned him the respect and admiration of coworkers and those he served.
On May 4, 2019, Adam married the love of his life, Heidi Marie Bartelt, and together they made their home in Eagle Lake. Their shared dedication to public service brought them together as active members of the Minnesota EMS Honor Guard, where they proudly served alongside one another.
Adam was also a proud former member of the Eagle Lake Fire Department and belonged to the Red Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club, Minnesota Chapter 8. Whether answering the call to serve his community or enjoying motorcycle rides with fellow firefighters and friends, he embodied loyalty, courage, and camaraderie.
Above all, Adam treasured his family. He found his greatest happiness spending time with his loved ones, especially his beloved grandson, Hudson Johnson, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Heidi Johnson of Eagle Lake; daughters Brandi Johnson (Travis Nelson) of Waseca, Katlyn Johnson of Eagle Lake, and Michelle Johnson of Waldorf; grandson Hudson Johnson; his mother, Barbara “Barb” Johnson of Eagle Lake; sister Kim Johnson of Lake Crystal; stepchildren Toby Sorensen, Michael Sorensen, and Ashtyn Sorensen (Ethan Tauber); his in-laws, Mike and Pam Bartelt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Aaron and Heidi Jo Bartelt; uncle and aunt Frank and Lori Van Brunt; and many extended family members and cherished friends.
Adam was preceded in death by his father, Timothy Johnson, and his brother, David Johnson.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Sunday, July 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato. A Celebration of Life will be held at the church on Monday, July 27, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour before the service. Inurnment at Eagle Lake Cemetery and a luncheon at the church will immediately follow.
Adam Michael Johnson will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to serving others, his devotion to his family, and the kindness and integrity that defined his life. His legacy will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched through his work, his volunteer service, and the love he shared with those around him.
